Happy Black Arm Band Day

Today is 14th February. We all know what that means, yes it is, it's Black Arm Band Day or AKA St Valentines Day.

Today is the day when singletons across the land either celebrated as they received one or more V Day cards or they were heavily vailed as if they were going to Princess Di's funeral, or some may choose to wear a Black Arm Band or both!

Now, I have recently split with my partner of 3 years, its been rough, I won't lie to you but I shant go into details on my blog, I am not in that "place" yet where I can reveal candid details of my broken "marriage", but my point is that this BAB (Black Arm Band) Day has been harder than usual for those reasons mentioned.

This doesn't mean that I am normally OK with BAB Day because in all honesty its a huge money spin isn't it?

I mean every day could be a day dedicated to lovers, surely? Where is the day for singletons? I tell you where, it's everyday!

If you are single and not happy because of this, then BAB Day is thrusted upon you wherever you go soon after Christmas is over and done with. It's in almost every shop, the songs on TV and radio are often lovey dovey ones, big red hearts are everywhere. It really is lovely if you are in a relationship and if you're not then you could do without that constant reminder, couldn't you?

In a way this year should be easier for me as I don't need reminding that I am single as I remind myself everyday and night as it is because it is still raw.

Should there be a day just for the single people of the land? Ah I doubt it, wouldn't work quite so well and if there was could you imagine the advertising campaign? Black hearts all over the place...not something the average person would want to see.

When I used to work for a big card shop, I always enjoyed serving people for BAB Day or any other significant "holiday" as so often people would buy cards "To My Husband" & "To My Boyfriend" and the other way round "To My Wife" & "To My Girlfriend", they would turn the cards over so we saw the barcode but everytime I would turn it back so I could see what they were buying and the embarrasement written all over their faces was priceless.

Is BAB Day a money making scheme set up orginally by Hallmark? Probably.

  1. Agree with your sentiments, it really is a big old cash cow. Liked the bit about the card shop lol, cant imagine people turning the card around - silly buggers.
Sounds stupid I know but I hope your heartbreak would be over when BAB day is. If only it was that simple.
